Position Status: Part Time/Non-Exempt

Work Schedule: 24 hours per week

Salary: $27,500/year

Job Summary:

The Fitchburg Art Museum is seeking a dependable Part-Time Custodian to support daily building preparedness and cleanliness, basic facility care, and operational readiness. This role reports to the Facilities Manager and provides coverage during absences, including emergency response and snow removal when needed.

The Custodian position has a critical role in the day-to-day operation of the Museum and its physical facility. This position is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the Museum buildings and grounds, ensuring cleanliness, safety and security for the staff, the public, and artworks. This position is also patron facing, having to, at times, answer questions, guide or support the Museum’s patrons during general operations or events.

The ideal candidate takes pride in maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for visitors, staff, and collections, and understands the importance of care and discretion in a museum setting.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

Custodial & Cleaning

· Clean and maintain galleries, offices, restrooms, classrooms, studios, collections spaces, staff areas, and public areas

· Sweep, mop, vacuum, and spot-clean floors using appropriate methods and to museum standards.

· Empty trash and recycling; restock restroom and janitorial supplies

· Clean glass, display cases (exterior only), and touch surfaces

· Other cleaning as needed, reported, or required.

· Works with all Departments to deep all clean spaces (yearly).

Building Support

· Perform basic tasks such as changing light bulbs, setting up event spaces, and moving furniture

  • Performs minor repairs and maintenance such as painting, replacing light fixtures or unclogging pipes.
  • Monitor building conditions and report issues to the Facilities Manager

· Maintain cleanliness, organize, and stock of Custodial Spaces

Grounds & Seasonal Tasks

· Assist with light exterior upkeep.

· Perform snow shoveling and salting during winter months when required.

· Exterior trash and debris removal.

· Storm drain clearing and maintenance.

Emergency, Coverage, and Support:

· The Custodian Position covers the Facilities Manager in the event of emergencies when the Facilities Manager is absent (vacation, sick, or off site)

· Emergency Coverage may include off time such as nights or weekends.

· Respond to custodial emergencies while on duty (e.g., spills, minor water issues, restroom problems).

· Assist with snow removal and ice treatment of walkways and entrances as needed (including potential weekends).

· Assist Development and Events staff, as assigned and with the support of the Facilities Manager, with event set up and breakdown.

· Assist Curatorial and Education Departments, as assigned and with the support of the Facilities Manager, with gallery and learning lounge preparations and installation.

· Assist with monitoring building/janitorial supply and report inventory to Facilities Manager.

· Preform other Museum related duties as assigned.

Skills/Abilities:

Required:

· Prior custodial or janitorial experience preferred

· Knowledge of safe cleaning procedures with various chemicals and cleaning tools.

· Ability to work independently or within a team and follow established procedures

· Reliable, punctual, and safety-conscious

· Ability to lift to 50 lbs. and perform physical tasks such as bending, standing for long periods of time, and shoveling

· Willingness to work occasional off-hours for emergencies or snow events

  • Detail-oriented and thorough.
  • Ability to perform basic repairs and operate tools or equipment used in routine maintenance.
  • Ability to interact with diverse staff and visitors at the Museum while remaining professional, polite, and courteous.

Preferred:

· Experience in a museum, school, library, non-profit, or similar public facility.

· Snow removal experience.

· Comfortable working at heights.

· Snowblower use experience.

· Weekends, nights, or flexible availability preferred.

· Experience in a trade: electric, plumbing, carpentry, etc.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

· Fluency in or working knowledge of Spanish language is a plus.

Work Environment:

· Indoor museum environment with public interaction

· Occasional outdoor work for snow and grounds maintenance

· Emphasis on cleanliness, discretion, and protection of museum property
